Moyes costs West Ham star huge opportunity after Deschamps announcement

David Moyes cost West Ham star Alphonse Areola a huge opportunity after a Didier Deschamps Announcement.

Areola’s position as number two goalkeeper for West Ham United has been the subject of fierce debate both last season and this season.

The 29-year-old was loaned to the Paris Saint-Germain Hammers last season but was limited to a Premier League bench role.

And despite the move being made permanent in the summer for a £10m bargain, nothing has changed this season with Lukasz Fabianski still Moyes’ number one.

Fabianski has been an outstanding servant to West Ham and one of the club’s best goalkeepers in modern times.

The Polish stopper has made no horrendous, blatant mistakes for the Hammers.

But some find its reactions and distribution – both in quality and distance – not on the same level as Areola’s.

Moyes clearly intends Areola to succeed Fabianski and become West Ham’s number one over the next five or six years.

However, many believe the transition should be made now, with growing demand for the 6ft 5in French international to be West Ham’s number one.

Areola has had to make do with playing in the European games this season and the last one with Moyes who gets stuck by Fabianski.

And that has had a big impact on the Hammers man today.

With Tottenham star Hugo Lloris injured, all eyes in France – and some at West Ham – were on who Deschamps would choose to replace him for Thursday night’s Nations League game against Austria.

It was between Areola and AC Milan goalkeeper Mike Maignan.

And Deschamps has made it clear that he sees Maignan, Milan’s number 1 goalkeeper, as his number two for the World Cup by selecting him to start against former Hammer Marko Arnautovic.

There is a huge difference between being a number two or number three goalkeeper for the national team at a major tournament.

If you’re the last, then more or less you have, other than a bizarre sequence of events or injuries, you don’t get a peek.

If Moyes had designated Areola as West Ham’s number one, as many feel he should have by now, Deschamps would certainly have made a difficult decision, as Areola is widely regarded as a better goalkeeper both here and in France.

Insider claims £500m West Ham claim but reality could be very different if David Moyes doesn’t turn things around soon
